Shark Victims Rally Behind the Species:
http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/13/shark-victims-rally-behind-the-species/?partner=rss&emc=rss

This article is about shark victims who are becoming involved with protecting endangered shark species. Some people may find it weird that the victims would want to help the sharks, but they look at it as if there is no one better then them to help. Over 73 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins, and multiple organizations worldwide want to change that. Most people think that shark attacks are very common, but in 2008 there were only 59 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide. "'If we want to have the ocean to enjoy, we need the sharks,' Ms. Salamone said. 'They're an important part of that ecosystem.'"

If you were attacked by a shark, would you be fighting for their lives? Do you believe that most shark attacks are started by sharks being provoked by humans? Do you think of sharks as vicious, or fascinating creatures?

  1. Watching Shark Week this past summer, I was already aware of the statistics proving that unprovoked shark attacks are very uncommon. This has always been very interesting to me and I find it impressive that the victims of shark attacks are willing to become involved with protecting endangered shark species. Learning about biodiversity in science class, I know that the higher amount of different species you have in an ecosystem, the more likely that ecosystem is to survive an environmental disaster. Therefore, eliminating sharks out of our oceans could potentially be catastrophic, and it's a good thing that these shark victims have enough intelligence and compassion to be willing to get involved with protecting endangered shark species.

I attached a picture of a shark about attack a swimmer, because I think it's interesting that all of the volunteers were once in this same position, and are still willing to give up their time to help out this species.

  2. Like kelly, I also watched Shark Week this summer and learned how uncommon unprovoked shark attacks really are. Personally, if I was a victim of a shark attack I don't think that I could forgive the species that took my limb. I do find it interesting that people can though. If you put all feelings aside, helping endangered sharks would be best for the oceans ecosystem. Biodiversity says that with more species the safer the ecosystem is from environmental disaster. Also, if sharks weren't protected and they became extinct it is possible that the food chain could also be disturbed.

That picture that is posted is pretty scary, that girl probably shouldn't have been swimming in water so invested with sharks. It was probably staged for a movie or something but I agree with Kelly, it is really interesting that the people who are protecting sharks once had their lives threatened by them.

  3. I have heard that too, that shark attacks are rare, and I think that sharks' reputations for being ruthless killers come from their frightening appearance. Contrary to popular belief, sharks will only attack you if you are wearing something shiny (it could be mistaken for a fish) or if they smell blood. The media has just created a false image of them and shark attacks are actually (like you both said) very uncommon.
Nice picture by the way, but I also think the picture might be posed, because there is no way a picture like that could be taken and posted had the sharks really been attacking. It does look scary though... the article that picture is linked to is very informative.

  4. sorry, didn't see the questions until now.

If you were attacked by a shark, would you be fighting for their lives?
I couldn't tell you how i would feel after being attacked, I would have to be in that position.

Do you believe that most shark attacks are started by sharks being provoked by humans?
From what i saw on shark week, yes. It said that most sharks won't attack unless they feel threatened. By provoking a shark you might be threatening it and it will attack.

Do you think of sharks as vicious, or fascinating creatures?
I think that sharks are both vicious and fascinating. When they attack prey they look vicious but that is also what is so fascinating about them.

  5. ok i'm answering the questions too...

1: I don't think I would be able to help fight for something that nearly killed me. I would probably support it because I know it's a good cause, but I would feel uneasy.

2: I agree with you guys; I think an animals natural instinct is to not attack unless they feel like they are in danger.

3: I have always been scared of them, so I would probably go with vicious. Even though shark attacks are rare, come on! They ARE pretty scary looking, and WILL attack if they need to.
