Top Solar Sources in the US and North America

Summary: This article is about the alternate renewable energy of solar power. This article talks about how there are many places in the USA where we could put large amounts of solar panels to produce very large amounts of electricity. One of the places they talked about was New Mexico. If we cover cover 25 kilometers with solar panels (that is only 0.06% of it's total landmass) then we would have enough electricity to power all of the USA (based on 2005 stats).

Personal Reflection: So far the government has done nothing with this land, even though it will cost a lot of money, it could end up being very profitable in the long run. I personally think they should do something with this land, and the other open land in the US. Even if we just use a little bit of the land, and just a little bit of solar energy, it is better then what we are doing right now.

Questions
1. Do you think the government should do something with this land?
2. If so, what?
3. Why do you think the government has not yet done anything with this land?

  1. I think thats cool that 25 kilometers of solar energy could power all of the USA. That's just unbelieveable! And yes i do think that this would cost a WHOLE lot of money and effort to develop, but it would definitly be worth it in the long run, because you don't have to pay for the sun; it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

    1. Yes.
    2. I think the government should definitly look into developing this land for solar usage, and it doesn't have to be all of it, just enough to test to see if it works, and then expand it.
    3. I think the government doesn't want to spend the money on it because solar power is a relatively new technology and expensive to develop. If it fails, all that money will have been wasted.

  2. It's strange how the government appears to be in favor of "going green" and using the smartest resources; however, if they have known about this way to save energy since at least 2005 then why haven't they done anything about it? I think that that is kind of hypocritical. Regardless of just solar panels, government agencies could also use biodegradable resources and wind panels.

    1) If the solar panels were laid out in Mexico, wouldn't the energy go to Mexico, not America?
    2) Why haven't government agencies such as the EPA acted on this?
    3) Even though it would obviously be very expensive to build this, do you think in the long run it would be a profitable decision?

  3. I also think that if the government was in favor of using the smartest resources they would have done it when they first knew about it. However, I believe that putting in a solar panels will pay for themselves over time and would be worth the time and money.

1.) yes, America has the space to do so in the mid-west/ north mid-west

2.) I agree with micheala, we should do a little at a time then build on it if it works out

3.) I think that the gov. has not done anything with the land yet because installing the solar panels are expensive and are not guaranteed to work, therefore the money spent would have gone to waste.
